The Call Has Been Made: Pomona Valley Review Submissions Are Now Open

It’s no secret that I have stepped into the position of managing editor for the arts journal, Pomona Valley Review for the upcoming 12th edition. For those that don’t know, PVR is an arts, poetry, and short story journal that comes out once a year and is run out of Cal Poly Pomona by alumni, graduate students, and faculty from our English Master’s program. You can check out the current issue here:

As the new managing editor, I want to spread the word far and wide that submissions are now open for art, poetry, and short stories.

Our submission guidelines are as follows:

For Short Fiction

Submit 1-2 short stories or novel excerpts in separate Word files as separate submissions that do not exceed 6000 words each. The title of each submission should be only the title of your fiction. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure smooth submission and response.

For Poetry

Submit 3-5 poems in separate Word files as separate submissions that do not exceed 1000 words total. The title of each submission should be only the title of your poem. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure smooth submission and response.

For Art

Submit 3-5 artwork images as separate Word, PDF, or JPEG images, each as a separate submission with the highest resolution possible. The title of each submission should be only the title of your image as you would like to have it published. Specify “Untitled” for all untitled pieces. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure smooth submission and response.

Additional Guidelines

Submit no more than two types of manuscripts at one time (e.g., one story, four poems). Simultaneous submissions are accepted and encouraged, but let us know immediately if your work is to be published elsewhere.

Please allow several months for our editors to respond to your manuscript before you submit again. If after this time period you have still not received a response, please notify us by email and we will check to see if your submission was received.

Manuscripts should be single-spaced and include a header with your name and email address on every page. Please select the “No Spacing” option in Word for the ease of formatting your work, making any necessary changes in formatting thereafter. Please proofread your work thoroughly to ensure acceptance.

Include a short bio of yourself in the cover letter, which will be published with your work, should your manuscript be accepted. Refer to previous “Biography” sections of PVR issues for examples.

For the title of your submission, please include only the title of the actual work via Submittable, as we will already have your name.

To submit your work, check out our submission guidelines as well as our link to Submittable.

Submissions close June 6th and we accept work both in English and in Spanish. Mark your calendars and get your work in!

    Dear Amanda Riggle,
I write to ask if you would look at a short five minute piece – BLACK on BLACK.
Tried to write direct to Black Lives Matter, which should go without saying, but on bringing their contact up, the screen flashes constantly, making it impossible to write and, never seen this before.

Have just noticed, can contact an individual -you – and wonder if you would oblige me with your opinion, good or bad.
If you would , I can only send it by email to an email address. I hope you can find the time for this.

    Very Best Wishes,
    Yours Sincerely,
    James Lafferty
